Survey of Assessment Practices

Given accountability requirements, it’s not a question of whether you’re gathering assessment data—rather, it’s how you will use it to improve what’s going on in the classroom. In other words, when it comes to evaluating student learning, either you seize the data or the data might seize you!

The Survey of Assessment Practices helps you identify classroom teacher perceptions of the kind, quality, and uses of assessment practices in your school, including classroom formative and summative assessments, external classroom assessments, and balanced assessment systems. It also measures the extent to which classroom teachers perceive that there is a community of practice around assessments at their school.

An easy-to-use, Web-based tool, the Survey of Assessment Practices guides instructional improvement and defines professional development needs. Collaborative educators are much more successful at bringing lasting, positive improvements to instruction. The survey paves the way to collaborative conversations that might include the following types of questions:

  • How are we collecting evidence of student learning?
  • How are we using assessment data to improve instruction?
  • Are we using formative and summative assessments appropriately?
  • Are our instructional approaches based on best practices?
  • Are we aligned with each other in our assessment practices?

The survey requires just 20 to 30 minutes of your time.

After completing the survey, you might decide to:

  • Form a professional learning community to incorporate survey data into a process to improve formative and summative classroom assessment practices.
  • Set professional development priorities.
  • Review instruction and pinpoint the instructional areas most critically in need of attention.
  • Design or improve on a district common assessment program.

If you’re ready to seize the data, we at AdvancED and Measured Progress are here to help. Our organizations share evaluation expertise and a passion for advancing student learning. The Survey of Assessment Practices is enriched by both our individual experience and our common bond.
