Classroom Assessment

Assessment Literacy

Every administrator and teacher needs to recognize the "information power" that accurately administered and effectively used assessments bring to classroom instruction. It's important for educators to understand the practices, purposes, and uses of the various types of assessments and the information each reveals. In this face-to-face session, educators will learn how to apply different types of assessment tools, understand basic design formats, and use strategies that extract solid information about learning. Afterward, educators will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of creating a balanced classroom assessment system, using a variety of strategies.
  • Recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each type of assessment.
  • Engage students in the assessment process.

Formative Assessment

Many educators grapple with the differences between formative and summative assessment. Simply put, formative assessment is part of the day-to-day instructional process. It happens during instruction, not after. As a practice, formative assessment gives both teachers and students feedback to help clarify misconceptions and refine skills during the learning process. The key to effective formative assessment practice is getting teachers to act upon the information they gather during student learning. In this workshop, we guide you through the process of putting formative assessment data to work.
